Abrau - Durso wine company.
The south of Russia
is the motherland of Russian sparkling wines. For the first
time the sparkling wine in Russia was produced in the 18th
century on Don river according to a special original "kazak"
method. Later the sparkling wine was started being produced near
Novorossiisk in the estate Abrau - Durso. The classical French technology
which was used there had been designed in the 18th century
in the Province Shampain. The
history of Abrau-Durso begins in 1870. On the Emperor's
order Abrau territory was bought for testing the growing of
vine 20 kilometers near Novorossiisk.
At
that time Ioganensburg Risling was highly popular. It was one of
the most noble grapes among 22 varieties of this sort which
existed at that period. 10 thousand vines of Risling for white
wine and Portugileze for the red wine were brought from duke Metternikh's
gardens from Ioganensburg on Rein river. The vines were planted
in a special yard of Abrau-Durso estate. In 1872 thirty more
thousand vines of dark-blue Burgundia grapes were bought.
The first vineyards in Abrau-Durso
were started in 1974. Besides Risling and Portugeleze, other
sorts of vine brought from Livadija - Cabernet and Semiljon were
planted there. 4 years later the first wine was produced.
