                  The history of wine making on the South of Russia

    Approximately at the same time the gardening - agricultural research station was  organized in Sochi. Its aim was to select fruit cultures and vine and to grow and sell  plants.  The development of vineyards and winemaking in Russia was sufficiently  affected by  Barbara's college of gardening, winegrowing and winemaking which was  opened at the end  of the19th century in Tuapse. The college was named after  daughter of Maecenas  K.Sibirjakov whose dream was to use the unique God given  and Nature given chance  completely: to make Black sea coast the best wine making  region in the world.
    It was at the college that for the first time in Kuban vineyards were lifted up the  vine-prop. Chemical means of fighting with harmful insects and vine diseases were  started  being used. New sorts of vine and new ways of forming of vine plants were  studied. New  machines for between - the - row processing were tried. 88 students  studied at the college  in 1903.
    In 1905 the common harvest of grape on the South of Russia exceeded 21340 tons.  It is  important to note that high quality European technical and eatable sorts  which  provided  good wine materials and wines prevailed.
